Joel plays an active role in Maryland politics, having just recently been elected to serve in local government as a Council Member for the Town of Chevy Chase, Maryland, where he is the Community Liaison. Earlier, Joel ran for Congress in the historic Maryland-8 Democratic primary in 2015 - 2016. During his run for Congress, he was described by the New York Times as having “serious foreign policy credentials.“ He was also profiled in the Washington Post. In addition, Joel has been politically active foreign policy Democrat throughout his career. He was appointed to a senior State Department position during the Obama Administration, where he served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs, in addition to having served as a senior Democratic foreign policy aide in the U.S. Senate.
